More than 30 years ago my news reporter colleagues and I shared black humour over the latest news, however un-politically correct it may seem today. The first sign of cancer, we joked, was the inexplicable desire to run across Canada. No disrespect to what Terry Fox began in 1980. Although we were taught in journalism school that a charity plea for money was never news, Terry Fox changed all that… Raising money for cancer research became and remains big news.
Which brings me to my daughter Kate. She’s not running across the country. At age 18, she organized a team for the Underwear Affair, a charity run to raise money for cancers below the waist… And raised $20,000. Last year she did it again and raised $30,000. This year she and best friend Erica have a new plan that is bound to have the donations pour in and it might just make the news too.
